The Trapper Arne Inventory

A section of the Trapper Arne inventory. The DIPPER Trap takes so little space that you don't see it among all the larger traps. But it's there.

The DIPPER trap is the favorite trap among young crayfish trappers. And many old ones too. Sink this trap from a pier, bridge or a rock by the side of a lake and you will see the crayfish fighting for the bait. A bait clip in the center draws the crayfish to the lowest part of the trap. Pull it up quickly and you'll have some crayfish to add to your total catch. Lots of fun for young and old. Comes with a six foot string and a wooden float.

The DIPPER modeled by Annika The DIPPER trap is made with nylon netting over a galvanized steel ring. A second, inner, ring makes sure the catch will stay put as you pull the trap up.

The DIPPER trap is a light weight trap that quickly sinks to find its place on the bottom of the lake. A cork attached above the trap will keep the nylon lines away from the hungry crayfish. At the end of the six foot long line, a wooden float serves as a handle when you throw out or pick up the trap.

Measurements: length: .25" - diam: 12" - weight: 8 Oz. - Mesh size: 3/4".

The DIPPER is the simplest trap for catching crayfish. Yet, it is remarkably efficient when baited with the right bait and used when the crayfish are hungry and active. This type of trap was the first I used when I started catching crayfish both in Sweden and in the US.

The wooden float is clearly visible while the bait hook disappears in the netting.

The DIPPER crayfish trap Another view of the DIPPER showing its size in comparison with the TRAPPER and the BLUEBOY. Just for fun I added a red painted and mounted Arizona crayfish to add perspective to the 'still life' of the traps.

This picture also shows how the 'mouseover' works. Two picures showing at the move of the mouse.

The DIPPER Compared to the larger, closed, crayfish traps like the TRAPPER, BLUEBOY and JACKPOT, the DIPPER is less expensive and does not require being set out from a boat. Best used from a pier, bridge or large rock in the lake, but keep your eyes on it to pull it up as soon as crayfish enter.

The corks that hold the strings away from the crayfish and the wooden float are painted red for easy visibility.

The DIPPER

This picture shows the simplicity in design of the DIPPER trap. This simplicity is what makes it so affordable and easy to use. After all, it has been a popular crayfish trap everywhere since I was a kid.

When you throw out the DIPPER, it is nice to know you have a handle to keep if from flying away from you. As with all other Trapper Arne traps, a bait clip keeps the crayfish from dragging the bait away.
